It is a wheel. It has a groove. The rope runs in this groove.

It is the essence of the pulley.

We consider it a powerful tool for sailors and exercisers, but the physics is seemingly simple. A pulley is a wheel with a flexible rope, cord, cable, chain or belt on the edge. This simple device has changed the world for thousands of years before we realize its importance, it may seem insignificant.

More Than Just a Wheel

Technically, the wheel itself is called a pulley if it has a specific grooved end designed to prevent the rope from slipping. However, the whole assembly is usually called a pulley.

It is rarely used alone in serious work. You can find them individually or in combination to convey energy and movement. Think about the elevators in your building. Or the local school flagpole. Both rely on pulleys to change the direction of force.

In industrial environments, the pulley shaft is attached to the shaft. Power is transmitted between these shafts via endless belts. loops with no ends, it just runs continuously over the pulley. This is the essence of a belt drive system. It transfers rotation from one point to another without rubbing against each other.

The Block and Tackle

When you need to lift something heavy, you don’t just use a pulley. You build a system.

One or more independently rotating pulleys can be combined to achieve a mechanical advantage. This is how to lift a car engine with your bare hands. The shaft around which the pulley rotates can be attached to the frame or the moving block.

When you combine pulleys, pulleys, ropes or other flexible materials, you get what is called a pulley block. This is a classic technical solution to increase strength. When pulled down, the weight increases. The farther you pull, the less distance the weight travels, but the more force it uses.

Ancient wisdom

This is not a new technology. It is very old.

Archimedes, a Greek mathematician in the 3rd century BC, used a compound pulley to pull a ship to land. We are talking about big ships. He did this using a rope and wheel system.

The pulley is considered one of the five simple machines along with levers, wedges, wheel and axle, and screw. These are the basics of mechanics. Without these, it is not possible to build complex engines.

Why is this important today? Because every time you open a weighted window, use a zipline, or see a crane lift a steel frame, you’re watching Archimedean physics in action. The principles have not changed. The materials have. The scale has. However, the slotted wheels remain unchanged.

It works because it redistributes force. It doesn’t create energy. It just makes the impossible manageable.

The next time you see a rope hanging from a hook, take a closer look. There may be a sheave inside. And behind that sheave are centuries of human ingenuity.
