Quagga subspecies

The extinct quagga is a subspecies of the plains zebra. It lived in South Africa. Because of its unique color, it was originally considered a separate species. This animal looks like a cross between a horse and a zebra. It has stripes on its head and neck. The fur gradually fades towards the hips and becomes a more solid color. The last quagga died at the zoo in 1883. Scientists retrieved DNA from preserved quagga fur. Efforts are currently underway to revive the subspecies in South Africa.
